What is the Magical Leaders programme?

Magical Leaders, or Ceannairí Draíochta, is a peer-led education programme for 5th and 6th class students, developed by Zeeko Education and supported by Enterprise Ireland. The program teaches 21st century skills such as communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity through the lens of entrepreneurship.

What does Ceannairí Draíochta mean?

Ceannairí Draíochta is Irish for Magical Leaders. Zeeko is an Irish company and even though the programme was created to support children all over the world, we like to acknowledge our Irish roots. But don’t worry, if you are chatting with the Zeeko team and mention Magical Leaders we will know what you mean!

What age group is Magical Leaders for?

Magical Leaders was developed for pupils aged 10-13.

How does the programme work?

The program consists of 6 lessons, each of which focuses on a key skill. Each lesson has a lesson plan that can be viewed digitally or printed, an online world where students can explore and engage in interactive activities, and a student activity book. There is a tutorial lesson available for teachers and pupils to practice with before the delivery of the lessons. For more information on how the programme works, check out this video.

What devices can I run the Magical Leaders Programme on?

At present, the Magical Leaders Software must be run on a web browser using a PC or laptop.

How should I divide my class into groups for the delivery of the Magical Leaders Programme?

Each group of peer leaders should consist of 5-6 pupils. Within each group there should be:

  • 1 confident presenter
  • 1 support presenter
  • 1 computer driver
  • 4 group leaders

For more details check out this video.

Can Magical Leaders be taught remotely?

Yes, the Magical Leaders programme can be facilitated remotely, although it is preferable to do it within a classroom setting.

Do the students need to have devices for this programme?

No, the Magical Leaders programme is run from the teacher’s whiteboard in the classroom. However, if students do not have access to devices you will need to print out some of the pupil’s resources.

Do I need to print out copies of the resources for each pupil and each lesson?

No, you can view all of the Magical Leaders Resources digitally. We would recommend printing out the Presenter/Computer Driver notes (3 copies) and Group Leaders Sheets (2-3 copies) for the peer educator groups (5-6 pupils in total) to aid with their delivery of the lesson.

How long does the programme take?

You should allow at least 1 hour per lesson. You can engage in the programme at any time that suits your class timetable.

Is this programme similar to the junior entrepreneur programme?

No, it’s different as this is peer-led and focuses on learning and practicing transversal skills. It also allows pupils to engage in an interactive experience based on different worlds created with their unique themes and lets pupils explore those worlds while maintaining focus on developing their communication, collaboration, and critical thinking skills.

Appyness Online FAQs

Below is a list of FAQs about the Appyness Online programme. If you do not find the answer to your question, please get in touch. You can email us at info@zeeko.ie. We are always happy to hear from our customers.

What is Appyness Online?

Appyness Online is a peer lead Internet safety course for 3rd-6th class students. This program has been developed with the view of teaching pupils how to harness the opportunities offered by the Internet while remaining safe online.

Does Appyness Online fit in with my curriculum?

Appyness Online compliments the SPHE (PSHE in the UK) curriculum addressing Internet safety and using a peer-to-peer/blended learning approach. It has been developed using a child-centered approach which is then tested in Irish and UK schools. The unique features of the program make it a useful tool for class exercises and homework. Therefore, parents can also be involved in Appyness Online tasks and learn about Internet safety themselves.

How do I deliver the Appyness Online program to my class?

The Appyness Online program consists of the online AO software which can be accessed on a laptop or desktop computer, printed teacher and pupil notes, and an optional digital wellbeing survey - to be completed both at the beginning and the end of the program to track pupils progress.

How many lessons are involved in Appyness Online?

The number of lessons involved in the Appyness Online program differs per class group:

  • For 4th/5th/6th class students there are 5 lessons
  • For 3rd class student, there are 4 lessons

How long do Appyness Online lessons take?

Each lesson takes around 30 to 45 minutes. Zeeko recommends completing one lesson each week for five weeks to give the teacher and peer leaders adequate time to prepare for each lesson.

What content will be covered in Appyness Online?

The Appyness Online program consists of several lessons to teach pupils to navigate the Internet safely. The lessons for this programme consist of:

  1. Self Esteem
  2. Digital Footprints
  3. Screen Time
  4. Friends Online
  5. Cyberbullying

How do teachers get involved?

Zeeko recommends for one teacher to act as the core facilitator for the program. This teacher will assign peer leader roles and monitor the progress of pupils throughout their presentations being ready to step in if needed.

What is peer leadership?

Peer leadership gives students the opportunity to deliver the lessons to their classmates. Each week a group of peer leaders is tasked with delivering a lesson. Before each lesson, the peer leaders will be given an opportunity to practice at home. Then, during the lesson, some of the peer leaders will act as presenters while the remainder of the group will act as group leaders.

What is a peer leader?

Peer leaders are 6th class students who will run the Appyness Online program. There are two types of peer leaders within a class:

Presenters - These pupils control the software and lead or present the lessons. For each lesson there will be 2 presenters.

Group leaders - These pupils lead group discussions on activities with pupils from the class that are receiving the lesson.

What is the role of a presenter?

For each lesson, the two presenters will be tasked with delivering the lesson content.

Presenter 1 will stand at the top of the class and present the lesson to the class.

Presenter 2 will work the software and move the character through the virtual world while supporting presenter 1.

How will presenters know what content to deliver?

The Appyness Online program consists of an online software on complementary pupil and teacher's notes books. these people on teacher notes allow everyone to follow along with the program content as it is displayed on the classroom whiteboard. these notes also include helpful prompts and instructions to keep presenters on track throughout the lesson.

What is the role of a group leader?

The role of the group leader is to facilitate collaborative learning during the lessons. It is up to the group leader to ask questions and get their group thinking more about what they just heard or learned. Group leaders should take some time to prepare questions for their group in advance of the lessons.
